About St Columba's

St Columba’s is a city parish, and the district has been built up for more than a century. The foundation stone was laid on Easter Tuesday 23rd April 1889 which preceded the opening of the church on Sunday 17th November of that year.

On Celebrating the Dedication of the church on Friday 17th November 1989, in the presence of the late Cardinal Gray, Archbishop Keith O’Brien (now His Eminence Cardinal O’Brien, and a fellow parishioner), wrote – Over 4,000 people were baptised in St Columba’s over the past 100 years – but how many more have been nourished by the Bread of Life in Holy Communion; by the Word of God spoken Sunday by Sunday at Mass; and by the vibrant Catholic life of this parish which has given birth to three daughter parishes in this south side of Edinburgh.
